The Octopus Vase from Caltagirone, Antique Mother of Pearl brings the Sicilian sea into the shape of a classic vase: on the rounded body in antique mother of pearl, a warm beige washed with glazes that imitate the passing of time, a red octopus modelled by hand climbs with its tentacles wrapped around the belly and its head resting on the shoulder of the vase. The suckers are marked one by one and the tentacles lift away from the surface, letting the light through. Forty centimetres of sculpture where Caltagirone ceramic meets the Mediterranean.
